American Chronic Pain Association

The American Chronic Pain Association was founded in 1980 by Penney Cowan in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with the following Mission: a) To facilitate peer support and education for individuals with chronic pain and their families so that these individuals may live more fully in spite of their pain; b) To raise awareness among the health care community, policy makers, and the public at large about issues of living with chronic pain.
After many years of living with chronic pain, Penney had participated in the pain management program at the Cleveland Clinic and was eager to maintain the skills she had learned there when she returned to daily life. She placed a notice in her church bulletin and soon found others whose lives were compromised by ongoing pain. They began meeting as the first ACPA support group. This one small group quickly became many.
Today several hundred ACPA support groups meet across the US and in Canada, Great Britain, and many other countries. The organization’s website features a variety of unique materials — assessment tools, manuals, video program, forums, a newsletter (“Chronicle”), and other offerings — serving as vital resources for individuals seeking to improve the quality of their lives, their families, and for the professionals who help them. |

U.S. Pain Foundation
Founded by a fellow pain sufferer, the U.S. Pain Foundation believes strongly in the importance of connecting those who share the feelings, frustrations, and daily challenges of living with pain. The organization’s support groups and other hands-on programs help build a caring community, offering helpful insights on how to define pain in ways practitioners and care providers can comprehend, or new techniques for communicating with friends and family.
U.S. Pain Foundation resources help patients understand the physiology and psychology of pain, plus its personal and social impacts. The group also provides valuable information about local, regional, and national events that inform, connect, and inspire. Another role is helping patients to navigate governmental issues — such as Worker's Compensation, or SSDI — and advocacy to change unfair practices against people with pain. And, the organization also cares about tomorrow, funding research on better options for pain management and prevention. |
